Movie-goers are excited about a new theater opening in downtown Memphis on South Front Street next to Central Station. Malco Powerhouse officially opens Thursday.
Malco is one of the few family-owned movie theatre chains in the country, growing to 400 screens in six states. The $10-million Malco Powerhouse is located at 540 South Front Street.

“Movies are a choice people make and they say I want to go out to the movies. I want to be entertained. I want to go into this auditorium with a bunch of strangers and just escape for a couple of hours,” Malco Sr. Vice President David Tashie told Local 24 anchor Richard Ransom recently.
Malco was founded in 1915 and has been successful in keeping up with competition. Malco’s last downtown location is now the Orpheum Theatre.
“It means so much to me. I’m a retired person and I love movies and we are so blessed to have this movie theater downtown,” said Donna Banks.
“When we open the Powerhouse, it’ll be our re-entry to downtown 40 years later,” said Tashie.
Malco is the ninth largest theater-chain in the country.
