Whitehaven residents unhappy with condition of neighborhood Kroger

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – Kroger is in the middle of a $750,000 renovation of its Whitehaven store, but some concerned shoppers say there is no excuse for the filthy conditions.

“It’s so many of us that will not come to this store because we feel it’s unsanitary,” said Yvonne Nelson.

Kroger’s jingle used to say, “Let’s go Krogering today.” Nelson, of the “My Zip” organization, says she isn’t shopping anywhere with the lackluster conditions and customer service like what she describes in the Whitehaven Kroger at Shelby Drive and Elvis Presley.

“Why is there dried blood and stained blood in the meat section?” said Nelson.

Pictures taken days ago showing red liquid under racks in the meat cooler.

“It would not be in any other community, and I’m not going to stand for it in mine.”

Kroger meat coolers on Mendenhall in east Memphis had much cleaner looking coolers.

“There’s a difference of night and day as far as I’m concerned,” said Shirley Holliday.

The Whitehaven Kroger meat cooler really bugs Shirley Holliday.

“The meat cage has flies,” said Holliday.

Nelson says she and others have complained to Kroger’s corporate office as far back as April, they say with with no correction. Kroger corporate met with Nelson and others last month and were supposed to walk through the store together, but Nelson says Kroger kept putting the group off and pushing the walk through back.

The grocer released this statement saying, “Kroger Delta Division is moving forward to complete the $750,000 refresh of the Whitehaven Kroger Store, and we are working with neighborhood leaders to uplift our store, associates and the community.”

Holliday says she’s fed up with it all.

“I’m just not happy with it at all, and I think we deserve better.”
