MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has received the most powerful magnet in the world. It’s about a million times stronger than the magnetic field of the earth.
The spectrometer will allow researchers to see deeper into cells, like biomolecules, proteins, and DNA, than ever before.
Local 24 News was there Thursday when crews began installing the 20,000-pound magnet that was flown in from Zurich and trucked here from Atlanta.
“We use this one to gain unprecedented insight into important biological systems. Understand the mechanism of life and disease. Discover new drugs so we can treat the diseases,” said Dr. Charalampos “Babis” Kalodimos, chair of the Department of Structural Biology.
St. Jude says the magnet is part of their larger commitment to expand basic science. That commitment includes the $412-million advanced research center set to open in 2021.
