Cordova man charged with killing neighbor, apparently upset with the way the man looked at him

MEMPHIS, Tenn. ( – According to newly released court records, a Cordova man killed his neighbor because he was upset at the way the man looked at him.

Bryant Ward made his first appearance before a judge Tuesday morning, accused of shooting and killing his 61-year-old neighbor, Scott Hervey. It happened in the Riverwood Farms subdivision off Macon Road in Cordova. Neighbors say this is usually a quiet subdivision.

According to the police report, more than 25 shots were fired at Hervey. He was gunned down in front of a home. Orange spots on the lawn mark where police found shell casings from last week’s shooting.

Neighbors don’t understand why this happened. Both the victim and shooter live on the same block, not far from one another.

“To hear that happen to such an elderly guy from the neighborhood and people that live over here, uh, I kinda feel like there is a little more something to it than what they saying,” said neighbor John Verges.

According to court records, Ward’s sister said she and her brother were parked in front of their home, when Hervey drove by. She told police her brother made eye contact with the Hervey and her brother became upset.  She said he leaned out the car window and started firing shots at Hervey. She told investigators Ward got out of the car and continued to shoot the victim.

The victim jumped out of the car and ran to the front door of a home screaming for help. In his hand when he collapsed was a piece of paper with the license plate number of the car the shooter was in.

According to the court report, Hervey frequently monitored activity in his neighborhood in a neighborhood watch capacity. We’re told the neighborhood doesn’t have a neighborhood watch program but does have 24-hour private security. One security officer asked us to leave the neighbors alone.

“For you all coming out and the neighbors right here really wish you all would respect their wishes let them deal with their loss,” said the security guard.

Ward has a history of arrests, including theft and assault.

We’re told many of the homes on the block have security cameras and much of what happened was recorded.
