DESOTO COUNTY, Miss. (localmemphis.com) – One of the top republican contenders in the race for Mississippi Governor wants to use DeSoto County as a model for all school districts in the state.
Education is a top priority for gubernatorial candidate Bill Waller, Junior. The retired longtime state Supreme Court Chief Justice says since DeSoto is the largest and best district in the magnolia state, he had to meet with teachers to hear their challenges and concerns in the classroom.
“It’s a challenge for teachers to put one size fits all to all the students. And we all know that 2/3 of the students end up in the work force without a college degree, so they’re interested in what we can do to facilitate education. Because obviously an interested student, a challenged student is a better student,” said Waller.
Waller says he wants to raise teachers’ salaries even more to meet the average most educators make in the southeast.
