Grizzlies Discuss Leadership & Social Justice With Local Students On MLK’s Birthday

Local News

Some Beale Street Bears took time Tuesday to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on his birthday.

Memphis Grizzlies Jaren Jackson, Jr. and Joakim Noah hosted a panel discussion with 100 local students at Clayborn Temple.

The students came from Jiff, Bridges, Grizzlies Prep Charter School, and Whitehaven High School.

The panel shared their insights on the intersection of sports and social justice. It also challenged participants to identify how to drive change in their communities.

“It’s important to reflect on things that are bigger than basketball,” said Noah. “This is the time to talk about the legacy of Martin Luther King and what he meant to us.”

Students also participated in break-out sessions on social issues facing them today.

The discussion is part of a series of events commemorating the MLK holiday.

The Grizzlies will hold their MLK celebration game Monday against the New Orleans Pelicans.
