Memphis Police say one suspect is on the run and another in custody after an early morning robbery and shooting that led to a police chase.

It all happened about 3:00 a.m. Wednesday. Police say an officer on patrol heard gunfire coming from the area around the Memphis Inn in the 4800 block of American Way. As the officer drove into the inn’s complex, police say a black pickup sped past him. They say he tried to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver kept going.

The officer followed the truck to Weaver and Canary, where police say the driver pulled off the road into a grassy area, continuing about 400 yards until driving into a ditch. They say two suspects bailed out of the truck. A 16-year-old boy was caught. Police searched the area with K-9 units and air support, but the other suspect got away.

The 16-year-old was taken to Regional One in non-critical condition for injuries he sustained in the crash.

As the chase was going on, another officer located a victim at the Memphis Inn. The man said he found two men trying to steal items from his vehicle. He told police he pulled out a gun and demanded they return his items. He said that’s when the suspects fired at him, and he fired back. The man was not hurt.

Anyone with information in this case can call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.
