Mid-South residents can help keep the giant pandas at Memphis Zoo full and happy by donating bamboo that’s being grown on private property. The Zoo’s giant pandas Ya Ya and Le Le LOVE bamboo. In fact, bamboo makes up 99% of their diet. They are also notoriously picky eaters, which means they often change their minds about what species of bamboo they will eat, which parts of the plant they want and from where it was harvested. So, the best way to stay ahead of their change in habits is to have a wide supply of bamboo to harvest from.
Although the Zoo maintains a 10-acre bamboo farm near Shelby Farms, they still need many other sources to keep a healthy selection for our picky giant pandas. That’s where the public can help out. Anyone who has bamboo growing on their property can go to the Find It Section on this site to register as a potential donor.
