Driver Charged After Child Killed

UPDATE 3-27-2019: 22-year-old Keara Williams has been charged with driving on a suspended license and no insurance.  She’s currently being held in the Shelby County Jail.

Shelby County Schools released the following statement on the death of Rakayla Blount: 

“We’re deeply saddened by the tragic incident involving a Havenview Middle School student yesterday. Our thoughts are with the child’s family, and our focus is providing grief counseling and support for the students and staff at the school today and in the coming days during this difficult time. Superintendent Dr. Doris Ray held a moment of silence during Tuesday evening’s Board meeting and extends his sincere condolences to the family.”  


An 11-year-old girl, identified as Rakayla Blount, was hit and killed in Whitehaven Tuesday.

Memphis police say a car hit her in the 5100 block of Millbranch just after 3:30.

The girl was taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital where she died this evening.

Police say the driver will be charged.
