A Healthy Heart Just In Time For Valentine’s Day

Local News

There’s no time for broken hearts this Valentine’s Day. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in both men and women.

That’s why the Memphis Health Center gave tips Wednesday afternoon on how to maintain a healthy, happy heart.

Women who took part were educated on risk factors and other signs to look for. Organizers say the risk of heart disease is especially high in the African-American community.

“It is very important, specifically because one in four women will die of die of heart disease every year, and 23% of women who have a heart attack will die within one year,” says Erika Eubanks with the Memphis Health Center. “And the African-American community specifically has to deal with hypertension and coronary artery disease, which are two high-risk factors for heart disease.”

The women Wednesday were also given blood pressure checks.
