Accused Robber Tracked Down After Family Dollar Worker Slips GPS Tracker Into Loot

Local News

A Memphis man is behind bars charged with robbery, after a quick-thinking Family Dollar employee slipped a GPS tracker in with the suspect’s loot.

Steven Craig is charged with aggravated robbery.

According to the affidavit, the robbery happened about 11:40 a.m. Sunday at the Family Dollar in the 1600 block of Getwell Road. Police say Craig walked in and put a Sprite can on the counter, then pulled out a handgun from his waistband and demanded money from the cash registers. The clerk gave the suspect the money, and the guy ran away.

Police say the clerk had slipped a GPS tracker into the money, and they were able to track it to the 5700 block of Woodbourne. They found the suspect’s jacket and a BB gun in the backyard. Officers talked to the homeowner, who allowed them to search, and say they found Craig pretending to sleep on a bed.

Police say Craig was identified in a photo lineup, and that he confessed to the robbery.

He remains in jail on $96,000 bond.
