MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Another major win in Shelby County was by activist Tami Sawyer, who claimed the District Seven County Commission seat.
Sawyer ran as a Democrat against Republican Sam Goff. The seat was previously occupied by Melvin Burgess.
Hundreds of Sawyer’s supporters flooded the Blue Nile in midtown Memphis as they anxiously waited for the results.
"We worked hard for this for a few years now to build a progressive movement and to bring that fight for equality here in the county,” said Sawyer.
Sawyer was an integral part in bringing down the Confederate monuments back in December.
