MEMPHIS, Tenn. ( — No bombshell today on a crackdown of opioid doctors Local 24 first reported Wednesday, but U.S. Attorney David Michael Dunavant had strong words at his news conference Thursday.

“It is clear these defendants charged in this strike force initiative have caused much harm, addiction, pain, and perhaps even death here in West Tennessee. These defendants are nothing more than white-coated drug dealers with prescriptions pads,” said Dunavant.

Dunavant is the top federal prosecutor for West Tennessee. Fifteen doctors and medical professionals were charged in his district, including Dr. Jeffrey Young of Jackson, who feds say traded sexual favors for prescription pills. Memphis Dr. Thomas Hughes is accused of writing illegal testosterone prescriptions to himself

Investigators say they used data analytics to trace the number of prescriptions prescribed which led to the indictments of sixty people across at least seven states.
