The Beale Street Merchants Association is going to study the future of the $5 street cover charge.
The plan was put into place to keep the street safe by keeping those who just loitered out of the entertainment district.
A few weeks ago, merchants, along with members of the city council, went to New Orleans, to see how officials deal with potential violence on Bourbon Street.
Overall, the vice chair of the Beale Street Merchants Association says this summer has been successful, as they have continued to use the $5 cover charge on Saturday nights.
“We have had a great summer. You know we went through the anniversary of Elvis’s death with lots of guests from around the world, no problem there. Labor Day weekend was very well attended. No issues there,” says Joellyn Sullivan.
There were also no problems during the weekend of the Southern Heritage Classic.
The board is going to study whether they to keep the $5 cover charge. It will be discussed again at their next meeting in two weeks.
