Beloved owner of iconic Memphis restaurant The Four Way has died

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) Jo Ellen Bates, the owner of the iconic Memphis restaurant The Four Way, has died.

The restaurant made the announcement on Facebook, saying, “We will be closed this week (June 10-16) due to the passing of owner Jo Ellen Bates. Service have not been finalized at this time.”

The Four Way has been in business in south Memphis for over 70 years. The restaurant, which is known for its soul food and desserts, is located at the intersection of Mississippi Boulevard and Walker.

Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland expressed his condolences via Twitter.

“This past weekend, Memphis lost Mrs. Jo Ellen Bates. For years, her and her husband, Willie Bates, owned and operated one of the best and most historic restaurants in our city —The Four Way. Thoughts and prayers go out to her family,” Mayor Strickland said in a tweet Monday afternoon.
