MEMPHIS, Tenn (localmemphis.com) - After two days of searching, authorities have found the body of a 15-year-old boy in Johnson Lake off Frank Road near Collierville High School.
Investigators say the teenager is not from Collierville.
According to what friends told police, several teens had been playing basketball in the area. They were hot and sweaty and decided to cool off in the lake just before 7:00 p.m. Monday evening.
The teens were jumping off a cliff or embankment into the water and planned to swim to an island in the middle. The teens said the boy began struggling, and they tried to help him, but couldn't. He went under and didn't come up.
A woman in a boat called 911.
The Collierville Police Department is leading the investigation. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team has been assisting.
They used Imaging equipment, sonar, aerial drones, underwater cameras, and dive teams.
Search crews had a difficult time because of the terrain underwater. Tall grass and weeds, plus deep ridges, made the search challenging.
Johnson Lake is located about half a mile behind Collierville High School on Frank Road.
