BYHALIA, Miss. (localmemphis.com) - It’s been an emotional week for the Byhalia, Mississippi community after the death of a Byhalia High football player.
Dennis Mitchell, 16 collapsed and died during last Friday night’s game at Coahoma County.
Byhalia High was scheduled to play an away game against Center Hill Friday, but Center Hill volunteered to move the game to Byhalia’s home field.
Mitchell’s number #66 is painted on the field and Byhalia High plans to retire his number.
Center Hill High has planned a special tribute in honor of Mitchell at Friday’s game.
CHHS raised nearly a $1,000 for the memorial fund set up at Citizen’s bank.
The CHHS football team will wear helmets with #66 on the back of each one to show their respect and support for BHS.
Parents of Center Hill players say their hearts go out to Mitchell’s family and the Byhalia community.
"We are a family and we reach out to our community and we've always been about family. And our family extends to our other schools. To our other parents. It's not just about games that we play it's about our community,” said Rhonda Betts, a Center Hill High football mom.
An autopsy is being performed to determine what caused Mitchell’s death.
The kickoff for Friday’s game starts at 7 p.m. at Byhalia High.
