Celebrate Memphis: Mid-South’s largest fireworks display, drone light show

Local News

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – The Memphis skyline will expand in a dramatic fashion with a never-before-seen light show at the end of Celebrate Memphis.

Drones will scatter the sky for a one-of-kind show before the night closes out with the largest fireworks show in Mid-South history to follow it.

“A visual spectacle like you haven’t seen before, 200 years in the making in Memphis in May,” Memphis in May Vice-President of Marketing Robert Griffin said.

Griffin said compared to years past, Saturday’s firework show is going up a notch. He said thousands of shells will blast over the Mississippi River during a show he said is guaranteed to impress.

“It’s an even bigger fireworks celebration because what a better way to finalize this month-long celebration of Memphis than with a huge fireworks show, because everyone loves fireworks,” he said.

New to Memphis in May, 60 drones will take to the night sky with a light show synced to music and the Hernando de Soto Bridge.

“It’s really going to be interesting to see,” Griffin said. “The drones will take off from the south end of Mud Island and fly out over the river adjacent to Tom Lee Park, so that it’s got a beautiful canvas on which, to then draw out, sketch out, the different words and images in the sky over the river.”

The drone show will last approximately 14 minutes. During which, the drones will create designs in the sky that are symbolic to Memphis.

Great Lakes Drone Company, out of southwest Michigan, created and will perform the show.

“Visually, you’re going to see it’s rich in Memphis history and also musically. The music that’s synced to it either has music that’s very relatable to Memphis or has artists that are from Memphis,” Great Lakes Drone Company Sales and Marketing Director, Reyna Price, said.

Price said drone engineers spent more than 100 hours creating the show. A few drone engineers will be on sight during the demonstration which will play out through the company’s software.

“It’s very intricate in making sure that those drones, that they’re put in place. Once they’re synced into our GPS system, our software system, the show is basically uploaded,” she said.

The company makes its own drones and it’s so bright, the show can be seen from three miles away.

The drone light show is expected to begin at 9:30 p.m. with the fireworks to follow.

“This is what people expect at a birthday celebration, especially one this size. 200 years comes along once in 200 years. Come on, so let’s make a big deal out of I,” Griffin said.
