MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Memphis businessman Mike Bowen, the CEO of Champion Awards and Apparel, has died after a car crash in Costa Rica.

The 61-year-old died Saturday. In a tweet, T-Shirt Champions said:

We are deeply grateful for the kindness and compassion shown to our Champion family during this difficult time. We want to update everyone that Mike's funeral services will be on Saturday, February 16th. Visitation from 11:00am-1:00pm, memorial service at 1:30pm at Hope Church.

Bowen attended the University of Memphis, when it still went by Memphis State, and was CEO and president of Champion Awards and Apparel. The company was the largest local licensee for the college's merchandise.

Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland released this statement on Bowen’s death:

I am so sorry to hear about Mike. He and Suzie were friends of mine for many years. Mike was such a good man. As a successful business owner, he led our city in hiring employees with criminal records. Since I've been mayor, he helped and advised us on helping others get second chances. I will truly miss his can-do generous spirit and pray for Suzie and his family.

Bowen is survived by his wife and two sons.
