Closures For MEMFIX 4 Impacting Businesses Through Monday

Local News

All weekend long, drivers in Memphis have been dealing with a traffic headache as two major highways in the city remain close.

Crews were working on I-240 at Poplar Avenue, but the highway is shut down from Highway 385 to the Flyover. Poplar is also closed both eastbound and westbound. Closures are not expected to reopen until Monday morning.

The closures are part of the MEMFIX 4 bridge project.  The construction is impacting local businesses.

T-DOT spokesperson, Nichole Lawrence says the closures will continue until 6:00 a.m. Monday.

“It was worse last night, coming back from Germantown so it probably took 10-15 minutes longer than it would normally, which is annoying but,” says Memphis driver, Taylor Treas.

The construction is part of a $54 million-dollar bridge project to replace and repair four bridges by June 2019.

“It ain’t really ideal, kind of have to take a way longer route around to get here,” said Tray Madkins.  “In a couple of weeks, it will be back to normal, so you know, I’m fine with it.”

In the middle of construction there are several businesses that have been seeing less than normal crowds because of the closures.

“It’s definitely going to impact them for sure. It’s probably not something they were expecting and could really plan around so,” Treas said.

A representative from Target in East Memphis tells us business has been impacted but nothing too major that’s stopping their normal operations.  Meanwhile, many drivers are just following the detour signs and giving themselves a little extra time for their commute.

“They had the cones set up, so you just follow the trail, it makes it easy,” said Memphis driver, Danny Cox.

The interstate will be back open for normal operations Monday morning, a T-DOT spokesperson tells me these closures will likely continue next weekend.  T-DOT will make the official announcement Wednesday.
