Corrections Officer Receives Help After Wife’s Death

Local News
A corrections deputy for the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office received some unexpected help Wednesday following the death of his wife.

Officer Charles Gatewood recently lost his wife, retired Sergeant Pamela Gatewood, after her battle with cancer. Officers at the Shelby County Jail reached out to the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation, a national non-profit designed for correctional officers, for help.

Wednesday, Gatewood received a check for $1,500 to help cover the family’s expenses.

“Words can’t describe it,” says Shelby County Sheriff corrections deputy Tora Newton. “When things like this happen among us in our community, I think this is a time where everyone pulls together to make sure that we support our fellow officer.”

Several corrections deputies also signed up to be a part of the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation to make sure local officers in the future are taken care of during similar situations.
