MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – Dollar Tree shoppers are finding they’ll need more than a buck for items inside the discount store.
Analysts say one reason is because of increased tariffs, but the company says it’s only giving people what they want.
Frances McNiel loves Dollar Tree so much she runs a Facebook page to herald the dollar deals in store.
“You can go to Dollar Tree and get groceries,“ says McNiel. “You can get tile, glasses. You can grab anything you need at Dollar Tree.“
McNiel has shopped at the discount store since Dollar Trees sprang up the Memphis area but is uncertain of what could soon happen at Dollar Tree Plus stores.
Alma Townsend of Couponing with Alma is an online bargain blogger in San Antonio where Dollar Tree Plus is being tested.
“Dollar Tree Plus. What? Why? Why are they bring more expensive items into Dollar Tree,“ said Townsend.
Analyst says the increase is a result of Chinese tariffs. In a media release, Dollar Tree announced says it is testing a new concept to provide customers with more choices, more sizes, and more savings and for more money.
You’ll still be able to find the items you know and love for $1 like cleaning products, but Dollar Tree says the change will add more products and more value.
As a coupon queen, Townsend wasn’t quite sure what to expect before she went to investigate for her many followers. Townsend describes sections of higher priced products in each section of her local Dollar Tree Store.
Townsend said she found items marked from $3 to $5 fair and comparable to Target and Walmart.
“Their brand is a dollar. I don’t think they should deter from that,“ said McNiel. You know, don’t mess it up.“
