The Downtown Memphis Commission director says 8% of all buildings in downtown are in serious trouble.
The vacant buildings either need to be fixed up or torn down, while 37% of the other buildings need some repair.
This was part of the commission’s budget discussions with Memphis City Council members.
One thing the commission wants to expand is their Blue Suede Brigade, where volunteers downtown help tourists and others get around.
“We believe it’s the most important thing we can do, because there are so many tourists, residents, employees who encounter our brigade throughout the day and it may just be a sense of safety, because they’re there,” said Jennifer Oswalt with the Downtown Memphis Commission.
Oswalt expects South Main Street businesses to pick back up, now that the MATA trolleys are back in service.
