Driver of stolen car dies after crashing into tree when police tried to pull it over

6/26/2019 – MEMPHIS, Tenn. ( – Memphis Police are investigating after a deadly crash on Third Street and South Parkway in South Memphis.

Police say around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday Memphis Police officers spotted a stolen white Mercedes on Third Street. As officers tried to pull the car over, Memphis Police say the driver sped off, and a short time later crashed into a tree.

Local 24 News has learned the driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Medics rushed a second passenger, an adult man, to Regional One, where he is in critical condition. A third suspect, a juvenile boy, was taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital and he is expected to be okay.

According to a police report, the owner of the stolen car told police she was pulling into her apartment complex at 6441 Lost Oak Tuesday morning and noticed a sky-blue Chrysler Sebring convertible exiting the complex. She told police once she made it to her apartment, she saw two men get out of the vehicle, one with a rifle, and approach her. Police say the victim tried to run away, and the man with a rifle pushed her to the ground. The second man then demanded money and snatched the keys out of the victim’s hands.

Police say the victim then ran away, knocking on doors for help and the men left the area but returned a short time later and took her vehicle.

Memphis Police say the Tennessee Highway Patrol is now investigating the crash. The identities of all three individuals inside of the car have not been released.
