The Shelby County School Board voted unanimously Tuesday to levy charges against the suspended Hamilton High School principal accused of grade tampering.
Earlier this month, SCS suspended Monekea Smith without pay after investigators say she changed grades from failing to passing. She is also accused of allowing an employee to use her login to make grade changes during the 2015-2016 school year.
The board initially made a recommendation to terminate Smith. However, Tuesday night Superintendent Dorsey Hopson demoted Smith to a teaching position.
Smith has 30 days to appeal.
