West Memphis Police: Murder Charges In Death Of Arkansas Officer Dropped

WEST MEMPHIS, Ar (localmemphis.com) - UPDATE #2 on 5/1/2018:  The murder charge against Bobby Patterson has been dropped.

Just in from the West Memphis Police Department, Patterson was interviewed after being arrested and gave a voluntary statement providing an alibi that was not known prior to his arrest. This alibi was followed up and verified by detectives.

WMPD PIO tells Local 24 News that the arrest warrant issued on Patterson was based on eyewitness testimony which identified Patterson as the shooter in the case.  The PIO says, after a complete review of Patterson's alibi and information obtained to substantiate the alibi, it became clear that the eyewitness' identification could not be correct.

Patterson is still charged with possession of a firearm by a felon. All other charges against Patterson have been dropped following this new information.

UPDATE 5/1/2018: An arrest has been made in the shooting death of off-duty Forrest City Police Officer Oliver Johnson.

19-year-old Bobby Patterson was taken into custody Tuesday morning by West Memphis Police.

Patterson is charged with Capital Murder, 5 counts of a Terroristic Act, Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm from a Vehicle, Engaging in Violent Criminal Group Activity, and 4 counts of Criminal Attempt: Capital Murder.

He will be arraigned in West Memphis District Court Wednesday afternoon.

The Forrest City Police Department created a GoFundMe account for an officer shot and killed Saturday while off-duty.

Officer Oliver Johnson was killed inside of his West Memphis, Arkansas apartment, after a fight outside of the home led to gunfire.

According to West Memphis Police, Johnson was hit by a stray bullet and was not the intended target.

The GoFundMe fundraiser was created because Johnson’s insurance benefits are limited since he was not killed on duty.

Police are still looking for the suspects behind the deadly shooting.
