Local News

The Sevier County Sheriff’s office confirmed to the Summers family at about 4:45 p.m. Thursday afternoon that the medical examiner has positively identified two bodies found as that of Jon and Janet Summers of Memphis.

Over the past three days, the entire country has gotten to know the Summers family as they awaited the latest news. The father, Jon Summers, was an architect and huge University of Tennessee football fan. Mom, Janet Summers, was relentlessly devoted to the music career of their three sons.

Many people are grieving after learning that they did indeed perish in the fire the consumed the resort town of Gatlinburg in East Tennessee.

David Boone lives just four houses down from where Jon and Janet Summers lived.

“You always hear about it happening in California, Colorado, but now it’s happening in Tennessee. It hits home, and now that I found out it happened just down the street from me it’s even crazier,” said Boone.

Jon and Janet’s three sons were also injured in the wildfire. They are recovering and are expected to be okay.

A family spokesperson says all three are aware that their parents have died. It is likely a devastating blow. Friends of the sons say the family was extremely close.

“Always been a super tight knit family, but also made a really big point of making everyone that they met feel really included and a part of that family. Their parents have always taken really good care of all of their friends,” said Zachary Pike, who is a longtime friend of the family.

A fund has been established to help the Summers family. You can find it HERE.
