MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – Hundreds of students, parents, and staff honored a crossing guard who was hit by a car as they took part in National Walk to School Day at Grahamwood Elementary.
FedEx and Safe Kids puts this event on every year, but this was their biggest walk yet. They came out to support Flora Wallace, the crosswalk guard at the school who was hit by a car and serious injured three weeks ago.
There was no shortage of hugs for Miss Flo Wednesday morning. Wallace says she’s still healing, but is determined to come back.
“Next thing I know, I saw the hood of a white truck and I was lying face down in the street on the other side where I just left. And I didn’t know anything had happened until the parent that was there told me. And I asked them, “Why? Did you not see me?” He said he didn’t,” Wallace told us.
Parents and staff say her accident is another reminder that the streets need more safety measures like flashers around the school.
The elementary said FedEx and Safe Kids are working on a plan to cover the cost of what’s needed.
