MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – Nobody likes paying property tax, but the Shelby County Assessor hopes it make it easier for people to reach his office.
Thursday was the grand opening of a new assessor’s office in downtown Memphis. Assessor Melvin Burgess says its current location on Mullins Station near Cordova is difficult for a number of people to reach.
He says it’s important for people to know what they are required to pay.
“Homes and our personal property, that’s all we have when it comes to assets as constituents and taxpayers. So it’s important to know what stipulations you have when it comes to assessments. And anything that you might have to better understand what we do in this office,” says Burgess.
There are plans to open additional offices across the county, including in Whitehaven, Raleigh, and Germantown.
