Heavy rains move through Mid-South; one community offers sandbags to residents

Local News

CRITTENDEN COUNTY, Ark. (localmemphis.com) – Homes and yards are prone to flooding during the summer months, so the Crittenden County Road Department is offering free sandbags to prevent flooding.

D.C. Armstrong is an employee for the road department and said there have been families who will barricade their homes with sandbags to prevent flooding.

“Because of all the rain we had this spring and summer, it’s just an unusual amount of water and the people that have needed the bags have been flooded two or three times,” Armstrong said.

Crittenden County Judge Woody Wheeless said on Facebook that the all people need to bring is a shovel and the road department will provide the sand and bags.

Armstrong said some people took 45 to 60 sandbags home with them to cover their garage doors and doors to their homes.

The road department will be offering the free sandbags throughout the rest of the season for anyone who needs them.
