A rude awakening for some East Memphis residents Tuesday morning, when a man broke into several homes on the same street before being shot by one of the homeowners.
Memphis Police says they made contact with the suspect in the front yard of a home in the 3700 block of Sturgeon Avenue.
Investigators say 28-year-old Emmanuel Lane was the man responsible for the multiple home break-ins and vandalism.
Lynette Crawford was one of the victims.
“Broke into our house, knocked the deadbolt off, came in screaming and hollering saying someone was after him, somebody trying to kill him,” said Crawford who said she was fast asleep when Lane came into her home with her two daughters.
“And my daughter hid up under the bed with the baby and the other one hid in the closet,” said Crawford.
Crawford said the intruder didn’t take anything, but moments later she heard gunshots coming from her neighbor’s house. Police say that’s where the homeowner shot Lane and another person in the house hit Lane with the butt of a handgun to keep him from leaving the residence.
Nevertheless, Lane broke several windows in two more houses before finally being apprehended by police. Lane was taken to Regional One with non-critical injuries.
Several neighbors, we spoke to believe the man might have been suffering from mental issues. No one reported anything being stolen.
