Hundreds of graduates receive degrees apart of the TN Reconnect program

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com)- More than 1,400 degrees were given out during Southwest Tennessee Community College’s graduation on Saturday.

The graduation included about 175 students who were part of the “TN Reconnect” program started by former Governor Bill Haslam in 2017.

The program established Tennessee as the first state in the nation to offer tuition-free community or technical college to eligible adult residents who don’t have an associate or bachelor’s degree.

Among the graduates were a mother and daughter who graduated together from the same college program.

“They will be going into the community. They’re going to be your future healthcare providers. They’re gonna be your future administrators in your offices, and I’m so happy to be a part of this event,” said Shanita Brown of Southwest Community College.

The commencement speaker was Greater Member Chamber CEO and President Beverly Robertson.

According to the Tennessee Higher Education Commission, more than 1,500 adults across the state have enrolled in TN Reconnect since February 2018.
