MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – Thursday night, former Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam announced he would not run for U.S. Senate. Everyone was speculating who would get into the race for the Republican nomination. And everyone recognized the biggest prize would be the President’s endorsement.
Remember how crazy the GOP race for governor got last year because Trump did not endorse? It became the nastiest and most expensive primary contest in state history.
Fast forward to today. Just as potential candidates like west Tennessee Congressman David Kustoff were putting their toes in the water came a surprise tweet Friday afternoon from Trump.
He not only endorsed Bill Hagerty for senate, he actually made the announcement for him. In fact, we still haven’t heard from Hagerty, but he can’t announce as long as he’s the U.S. Ambassador to Japan.
With that one tweet, it’s hard to see how anyone else wins in this deep red state.
