MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – In Monday’s Ransom Note: it’s tough for teachers and not just because we don’t pay them enough.
So I was interested in one of the most thorough studies I’ve ever seen released Monday by WalletHub. It looked at other things besides teacher pay. It looked at how fast their incomes can grow, their pensions. It also examined which states are less likely to face a revolving door of teacher turnover. Which states have the best pupil to teacher ratio? Where is it safest to be a teacher? You get the idea.
Unfortunately when those two dozen metrics were combined, not one Mid-South state finished in the top half.
Mississippi was highest at 32nd, followed by Arkansas at 35th, and Tennessee at 41st.
We should aspire to be among the best. Other southern states like Kentucky, Virginia, and Georgia were all in the top half.
