Legal battle regarding new abortion law in Mississippi continues

Local News

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) — In Mississippi, neither side is backing down in the legal fight over one of the strictest abortion laws in the country.

The state attorney general defended the law that bans most abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected. It’s set to go into effect July 1, but Mississippi’s only abortion clinic is asking a federal judge to block it.

The same judge last year declared the state’s 15-week abortion ban unconstitutional. In court papers filed this week, the state attorney general’s office argues Mississippi wants to preserve fetal life “that exists from the moment of conception.”
