Her soft-spoken and shy personality could easily fool you, but Morgan Calvin, a sixth grader at Lake Cormorant Middle School, is a confident young leader.
One month ago, she went to Washington D.C. for the Envision’s Junior National Young Leaders conference. It was her first time away from home and away from her parents.
“When I first went there I started crying because I was nervous with all the people,” said Calvin. “My advisor told me there’s nothing to worry about.”
After a week of traveling the Beltway, seeing monuments and celebrities and lawmakers, Morgan came back to DeSoto county ready to lead.
One of the things she learned was to be a good friend to others.
The week in Washington got students outside the classroom with hands-on learning, stressing the importance of thinking creatively and getting the success skills needed to be leaders at home.
Calvin said what she learned will make her community and the world around her a better place.
