She’s called the “Mayor of Whitehaven.” This week, Hazel Moore was honored with the highest award given by the Memphis City Council.
Moore was given the MLK Humanitarian Award during Tuesday’s city council meeting,
Through her non-profit academy for youth empowerment, Moore has annual back to school health fairs, leadership development classes and she is the founder of the Whitehaven Christmas parade.
The Whitehaven parade has been marching down the heart of the community since 1998.
Moore says she came up with the idea for the parade when some children from her non-profit asked for something fun to do.
“We want them to have self-esteem. We want them to be motivated. We want them to know I can too,” said Moore.
Moore is also the owner of a hair salon in Whitehaven that has been in operation for over 40 years.
