Sports betting on Beale Street?
This week the Shelby County Commission voted to ask state lawmakers to allow betting on Beale.
That came just days after the Tennessee Attorney General ruled the General Assembly could legalize sport betting through legislation rather than needing a constitutional amendment.
What could that mean for Beale Street and the area?
If it was allowed on Beale business owners are betting it would bring more business to the street.
“It would bring more locals it would bring more out of towners it would bring more everyone in the whole area around here that enjoys betting on sports,” said Leo Allred, owner of Tater Red’s gift shop
There is speculation the betting on Beale would be located inside bars, similar to how betting takes place across the pond in the United Kingdom.
Sports betting in Mississippi has been hugely successful to the south of us at casinos in Tunica,
Shelby County Commissioners say the logic keeps the cash here, “Why would we want those funds to leave our city and our county,” said Van Turner, Shelby County Commissioner. He added, “We would use those funds to support other essential needs in our community. I can think education locally infrastructure.”
At this point, this is all just talk Tennessee lawmakers would have to take the issue up next legislative session.
There could be a lot of opposition in Nashville, getting the lottery passed in Tennessee took years,
“I think there is more good that has come out of the lottery than bad and I think there would be more good to come out of sports betting than bad,” said Turner.
“I’ve learned through history, from initial opinion to reality, a lot of things can happen between now and then so we will just have to wait and see how it goes,” Kevin Kane, CEO Memphis Tourism.
