MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – A man is accused of preying on women at the Kroger in Poplar Plaza and taking inappropriate photos.
A woman was shopping at Kroger in Poplar Plaza when she alerted by another woman a stranger was taking photos of her with his cell phone. Memphis police arrested 50-year-old Edwin Lopez Sunday following the accusations. According to an affidavit, a woman told her about the man following her in the produce section.
“So someone caught him, and wow,” said shopper Morgan Harrell, who frequents the store every couple of weeks. “I think girls need to stick together when it’s sexual harassment, because only women are really aware of how deep it goes and how often it happens.”
The witness also told the victim Lopez was doing the same thing to other women in the store. For shoppers at Kroger, it’s a warning to be more careful of who’s around them.
“You definitely have to be more aware of your surroundings and just pay attention to if someone is following you around,” said Sharika Patterson.
The victim next told a store associate, who contacted security. When an officer asked Lopez to unlock his phone, multiple photos of other women’s undergarments were discovered. Store surveillance showed the suspect going up behind women with his hand in his phone.
“I hope they throw the book at him, that’s disgusting,” commented Harrell.
The victim told Memphis police she didn’t see Lopez following her around but felt like someone was following her. Kroger released a statement saying, “The safety of their customers is our top priority. We are grateful for our security team, management, and customers who played a role in capturing the suspect.”
Lopez is charged with taking photos of persons without consent.
