MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – Tuesday MATA demonstrated new bus shields, which put a partial barrier between drivers and passengers. Bus drivers can lock the doors from the inside. They aren’t bulletproof, but they will protect bus drivers from most thrown objects.
“We don’t want a driver to become incapacitated while driving a bus, so it’s a safety feature for both passengers and our employees,” said MATA CEO Gary Rosenfeld.
The shields cost about $5,000 each.
MATA will begin testing the protection barriers in a few buses and will review how it went to determine if they will be installed in other buses.
