Memphis City Council honors Robert Church with resolution naming him “Father of Memphis”

MEMPHIS, Tenn. ( –  Tuesday the Memphis City Council passed a resolution naming Robert Church the “Father of Memphis.”

Church is known as the first black millionaire in the U.S. and for putting up money to save the city after the yellow fever epidemic.

The entrepreneur also is credited for many creations across Memphis, including the city’s first black-owned bank.

Church died in 1912.
