Memphis names street in honor of Fred Jones, founder of Southern Heritage Classic

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – Fred Jones, the founder of the Southern Heritage Classic, is honored by the city of Memphis when a street near Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium is named after him.

Fred Jones Way is the new name for the street near Tiger Lane. Jones created the Southern Heritage Classic in 1990 as a way to give top teams from HBCUs an opportunity to showcase themselves on a big stage.

This year is the 30th anniversary of the event, which brings in millions of dollars to the area as fans come from all over the region.

It all kicks off Wednesday with multiple events happening throughout the week, culminating with the big Tennessee State – Jackson State football game and battle of the bands Saturday night at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium starting at 6.
