Memphis Police Find Car & Take One Man In Custody In Series Of Thefts

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Memphis Police say Mt. Moriah Station officers have taken one man in custody after locating the Honda Civic used in a series of thefts from cars.

The stolen car was found at Perkins and American Way Wednesday afternoon. The car was originally stolen Monday, and police say it was used in a series of thefts from cars across the city.

Police say the first theft happened about 9:35 a.m. Monday in the 3400 block of South Third. The victim told police she went inside the Grizzly Mart, but left her keys in her silver 2012 Honda Civic (license plate TN 6J53U1). She told officers she saw a man walk to her car and get inside, and he drove off when she walked back to the car. She told officers she saw the suspect with a gun.

Police say the next theft happened 3:00 p.m. Tuesday in the 3400 block of Plaza Avenue at the Kroger gas station at Poplar Plaza. The victim told police she was pumping gas when she felt her vehicle move. She turned around, and saw a man inside her car, trying to take the keys out. She told officers her vehicle was running and the doors were locked. She said she yelled “Please don’t do it!” and the suspect then got out and took off, taking her wallet and driver’s license.

The victim told police a silver Honda, which investigators believe to be the same one from Monday’s car theft, had pulled up beside her during the commotion. A Kroger worker saw it speed away. No one was hurt.

A few hours later at 7:55 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to another theft from a car in the 1200 block of Ridgeway Road. The victim told officers she was sitting in her Kia Sorento, when a man she didn’t know opened her passenger door and started rummaging through her car while she sat in the driver’s seat. She said, “What are you doing?” and said the man replied, “It’s ok. You know me! Do you have anything?” The woman told investigators she jumped out of her car and ran to her friend’s car as she pulled up.

The friend told investigators she saw the man rummaging through the car, then get out and take off in a 4-door silver car, with possible damage to the passenger’s side. The women told officers there was at least one other person in the car.

Minutes later, about 8:10 p.m., police were called to the 6100 block of Mt. Moriah Extended. A woman told police she was leaving the store when a man in a gray car parked by hers opened the passenger door and grabbed her purse. She said the car then took off. Police say they were able to lift fingerprints from the car.

Minutes after that, just before 8:30 p.m., officers were called to a theft from a car at Neil’s Grille and Bar on Quince Road. A woman told police she had pulled into a parking spot near the front, when a man ran up to her passenger side front door and opened it, grabbing her purse. She said he then got in a light gray 4-door Honda Civic that had damage to the driver’s side front door area. She said at least two others were in the car, possibly a man and woman.

Police say they were able to lift fingerprints from the car.

One person is in custody. Police are still investigating who else may be involved. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.
