Memphis Police Warn About Scam Callers Claiming To Be With MPD And Demanding Money

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Memphis Police are warning about a scammer posing as a member of the Memphis Police Department.

Police say November 24th, a man called a victim, claiming to be with MPD, and demanding money. They say caller ID showed the MPD Tillman Precinct number of 901-636-3000. The caller told the victim he was involved with the disappearance of a missing girl, and demanded the victim send cash via Western Union.

Police say December 18th, another victim contacted them, saying a person had called from a Memphis Police Department number, demanding money be sent.

Police say this is a scam, and the suspect is simulating telephone numbers from the Memphis Police Department.

MPD will NOT call you to solicit money. If you get a call like this, contact MPD at 901-545-COPS, or go by any precinct.
