Memphis Spent Fewer Dollars With Minority And Women-Owned Businesses Than Previously Reported

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - The city of Memphis' math doesn't seem to add up when it comes to doing business with minority and women-owned businesses.

During his State of the City address in January, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said, “When I took office, just 12% of city contracting dollars went to minority and women-owned businesses. I'm proud to report that we closed our most recent fiscal year having doubled that - to 24%."

The city now admits it made a clerical error and only spent 18% of its budget with minority and women owned businesses last year.

According to the Memphis Business Journal, the city's spending calculations didn't include $154 million in public works contracts

The city says it has made changes in how spending is reported.
