Mid-South teen dies after collapsing in the heat

Local News

MILLINGTON, Tenn. (localmemphis.com)- A Mid-South teen has died after playing basketball outside in Saturday’s heat.

Millington Police Chief Mark Dunbar confirms 18-year-old Cedrick Malone collapsed on a basketball court near Navy Road and Hornet Avenue.

Local 24 News talk to a friend of Malone who saw him pass out.

“In the middle of a play, we all turned around one second and we turned back around this way,” said Isaiah Thompson. “Nobody noticed that he fell or anything. He was just laying there. We all know what happened, he wasn’t drinking any water. He was very athletic, non-stop me and him used to run miles. He was outgoing sometimes. Very caring person.”

Dunbar believes Malone was outside too long in the heat, but a coroner hasn’t confirmed that yet.

The chief says he tried to revive Malone, but he died at the hospital.

The temperature on Saturday got up to 92-degrees, with a heat index of 106.
