A Millington teacher had the surprise of a lifetime Thursday after receiving a prestigious teaching award that happens to come with a $25,000 prize.
Katherine Watkins teaches English at Millington Central High School.
On Thursday, she was awarded the Milken Educator Award for excellence. The award is described as the “Oscars of Teaching”.
The award was announced at an all-school assembly, but was kept a surprise for students and staff alike.
Watkins credits her students for her winning the award.
“They are what motivates me to want to do this job,” says Watkins about her students. “Teaching is a challenging profession and it has a lot of ups and downs, but when you have students like the students at Millington, it makes all the hard work worth it.”
Watkins can use her $25,000 cash prize however she chooses, but says she part of that money will be put back into her classroom and students.
