Children younger than 18 would be banned from using tanning beds in Mississippi under a measure moving forward in the state Legislature.
Senators on Wednesday voted 34-16 to pass Senate Bill 2847, sending it to the House for more debate.
Sponsors indicated they might consider watering down the outright ban to allow some older teens to use tanning beds.
Right now, children in Mississippi may use tanning beds with parental permission. But anti-cancer advocates say the beds contribute to skin cancer and children shouldn’t be able to use them at all. The National Conference of State Legislatures says the District of Columbia and 17 states have enacted such bans.
Opponents say the state shouldn’t interfere in decisions made by parents for their children or hurt small businesses.
