Most MLGW Customers Have Power Back After Saturday’s Storm

Local News

Nearly 50,000 customers impacted by Saturday and Sunday storms, MLGW working to bring full restoration

Monday, thousands of people had to cope with yet another day of no power due to the past weekend storms.

There are roughly 3,000 customers who remain in the dark, a big change from the nearly 50,000 customers who lost power this weekend.  That number is trickling down.

Some of the families in Whitehaven went into their third day Monday without electricity and plenty of homeowners in Whitehaven got about an hour of relief and then lost power again.  Many people are calling this situation frustrating, but they are making the most of it.

More than 40 crews are working to bring families back to some sense of normalcy.

“They had us back on and I guess they had a problem with one of the lines, I don’t know if it came loose or whatever; but they had to go back up the pole and put it back on,” said Michael Brownlee, who lives in Whitehaven.

For several families in Whitehaven, an area that still has outages, this past weekend brought back painful memories.

“We had a storm out here last year around the same time and it took a couple of weeks,” said Mike Dobbins, a Whitehaven resident.

Despite the inconvenience, these families are remaining positive.

“Well since it’s hot, we’ve just been doing yard work,” Brownlee said.  “Cold showers seem to help a little bit.”

Crews are working 16- hour shifts doing things like picking up debris and fixing snapped lines.

“It was a fast-moving storm and one of the problems we had, particularly in the Whitehaven area, was there was so many trees that fell into our lines, on our facilities, into our homes, so those trees caused a whole lot of damage,” said Gale Jones Carson, Director of Communications of MLGW.

Crews from several other states, including Kentucky, Illinois and Virginia are working to get the power back on.  Full restoration is expected by Wednesday.
