A teen is facing charges that include auto theft and evading arrest after Memphis Police claim he stole a car with a child in it.
The incident happened on Getwell and Elliston around 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning.
A woman with sons of her own rescued the child after hearing the mother’s screams.
“It was very scary, it was very scary.” Kimyata McWilliams had just arrived at a Q Mart in Southeast Memphis early Saturday morning when she saw a woman run out of the store screaming.
“I didn’t catch what was going on at first, but when she said it was a baby in the backseat, I instantly took off in the direction the car was going because of the little boy,” McWilliams said.
A Memphis police report states the woman left her car running with her son inside while she ran into the store. That is when McWilliams says she saw at least one teen jump into the woman’s 2015 Hyundai Sonata and take off.
“All young guys, going to steal a car from a girl with a baby. It’s just certain things you don’t do,” she said.
McWilliams says she followed the car until she saw a small child about five-years-old standing by the road. She picked up the child and returned him to his mother.
“He was crying. He had his hands up over his face. He was just trembling. His whole body was shaking. His legs were shaking,” says McWilliams.
Police say the teen left the child unharmed at the corner of Ellington and Echles. McWilliams said she just did what she hopes anyone would do for her.
